Manas Janyong’s Collection of Short Stories The Elder: Humor and Critiques of American Influence in Thailand

Abstract
Considering Thailand being influenced by the United States in the 1950s-1960s, Thai people reacted to this circumstance in both positive and negative ways. This article studies such reactions in eight short stories, selected from Manas Janyong’s collection of short stories The Elder, which criticize American influence on Thai society during the beginning of the Cold War. The result indicates that the author considers American culture, capitalism, and anti-communism propaganda as causes of social disorder, and uses humor as the main technique to raise comments in a comical way, which enables him to criticize on sensitive issues without being censored during the era of authoritarianism.
