Analyzing Chinese Drug Labels through the Lens of Generic Structure Potential (GSP)

Abstract
This study examines the generic features and language functions of Chinese drug labels. The data were sourced from Yaozhi Data, a database of traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions. The corpus consists of 46,491 words compiled from 100 Chinese drug labels. The study employs a modified framework based on Swales’ (1990) and Bhatia’s (1993) move model for move analysis, as well as Hasan’s (1996) Generic Structure Potential (GSP). The findings reveal that Chinese drug instruction manuals are goal-oriented discourse focused on medication usage. The labels are structured around 15 obligatory moves and 6 optional moves. The analysis of language functions highlights the use of subject-predicate sentence structures, declarative and imperative moods, written language styles, and medical terminology. In terms of verbal communication, Chinese drug labels serve a dual purpose: conveying drug information and providing safety instructions for proper medication use. This study establishes a connection between Contextual Configuration (CC) and Generic Structure Potential, offering practical insights for discourse analysis and Chinese for Specific Purposes (CSP) teaching.
