“Being Single is Sad”: Linguistic Strategies and the Hidden Meaning of Thai Online Jokes

Abstract
This research aims to analyze the linguistic strategies and the hidden meaning of online jokes that feature single people. Data were collected from humor-related posts from a Facebook page. 30 jokes from the collection of 100 humorous posts are about being single, which indicates that single people are the main target of humor. The research findings are that 8 linguistic strategies have been used as follows: (1) ridicule, (2) pun with violation of the parallelism rule, (3) intertextuality, (4) twist ending, (5) verbal irony, (6) pragmatic presupposition, (7) mock, and (8) satire. Moreover, there are also 6 hidden meanings of the jokes: (1) single people are unwanted people; (2) single people are pitiful people; (3) single people are a jealous people; (4) single people are lonely people; (5) single people are people with bad looks; and (6) single people are people disappointed in love. These hidden meanings create a stereotypic mindset that shows that “being single is sad” and has led to the reinforcement of values in Thai society regarding pressure to be a couple.
