Impoliteness Strategies in Cyberbullying on Thai Social Media

Abstract
Cyberbullying is a social phenomenon that has attracted attention from scholars in various disciplines. However, studies from a linguistic perspective are still limited, especially in the context of Thai society. This research aims to examine the patterns and linguistic strategies used in cyberbullying on Thai social media. Data were collected from comments under 35 news posts on the “E-Jan” Facebook page between 2021 and 2023, based on the felicity conditions of bullying speech acts, and analyzed using the concept of impoliteness. The study found both direct and indirect impoliteness strategies. The direct strategies include using negative words, in-group/out-group division, and expressing emotions. Indirect impoliteness strategies include using comparisons, using irony, nicknaming, disclaiming, and ellipsis. This research contributes to a clearer definition of cyberbullying and raises awareness about language use on social media, which may lead to more constructive and respectful online communication in the future.
