The Translation of Cultural Words in Three Thai Translations of She Diao Yingxiong Zhuan by Chamlong Phitnakha, Wo Na Mueanglung and No Noppharat

Abstract
This research studies the strategies used in translating cultural words in three Thai translations of the Chinese martial arts novel She Diao Yingxiong Zhuan by Chamlong Phitnakha, Wo Na Mueanglung, and No Noppharat. The classification of cultural words was done according to Peter Newmark’s theory and the methods used in the analysis were proposed by Mona Baker. The research found 18 strategies used. Dividing them into foreignization vs domestication, it was found that the translators were inclined to implement foreignization when translating cultural words. This was mainly done by utilizing loan words transliterated from the Teochew dialect, and in some cases a combination of loan words with explanations written in parentheses or footnotes.
