Contemporary Thai Poetry Writing: Creative Perpetuation

Abstract

This study aims to study the dimensions of the relationship between contemporary Thai poetry’s creation and creative perpetuation, and the creative process of contemporary Thai poetry that is inherited from Thai traditional literary norms. Contemporary Thai poets from 1973 to 2018 were studied and it is found that they produced their works through learning, ultimately giving rise to a literary process that was related to creative perpetuation. The creative process involves the incorporation of Thai literary norms in prosody, content creation and composition that serve as a foundation to create new works in different dimensions, for instance, using existing prosodic patterns to create new texts that contain traditional, new and adapted patterns, and using stories and events, or characters undergoing adaptation, adjustment, parody, collage and reinterpretation. These are creative productions through perpetuation based on the adaptation of literary norms or the creation of new texts to express new ideas according to new contexts.
