A study of explicitation strategies in translating Japanese language juvenile literature to Thai: A case study of translating pronominal pronouns

Abstract
This article investigates explicitation strategies used in translating Japanese to Thai. Data were analyzed from juvenile literature, focusing on pronominal pronoun translation. Results were that the use of explicitation strategies was visible when pronominal pronouns were omitted in source texts, but translators added them in translation, and when pronominal pronouns appeared in source texts and translators used more explicit words or expressions as indicators. Pronominal pronouns could be classified into five types: 1) pronouns; 2) relationship terms; 3) personal names; 4) common nouns; and 5) demonstratives. Factors affecting their use were related to linguistic differences between the two languages, translator preferences, context, and culture. These findings should be useful for future study of Japanese translation to Thai.
