Abstract

This paper examines 614 reports of Coronavirus in mainstream Thai online newspapers, Thairath and Matichon Weekly, using Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework of critical discourse analysis. Specifically, it investigates the explanatory focus and trends in attitude toward the pandemic and systematically observes, summarizes, and analyzes relevant reports in three aspects: linguistic, discursive, and social-cultural practices. Using qualitative and quantitative approaches, the paper employs a threefold analysis process. Firstly, it adopts Halliday's systemic functional grammar to analyze lexical characteristics and modality of Thai news discourse in the dimension of description. Secondly, the comprehension and production process are examined from the intertextual perspective of news report sources and reported speech at the interpretation level. Finally, the paper combines social background and cultural context to give an explanation about the relationship of text and social-cultural practice. In so doing, the author discovers that COVID-19 news discourse reflects Thailand's current socio-economic reality and the existing social contradictions between the Thai government and its citizens.
