Isan Villagers and “The Culture of Migration”

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to examine conditions which promote the culture of migration through the life experiences of villagers of Baan Sawang in Nhong Wua Sor district, Udon Thani province, Thailand. The study employed a qualitative method by collecting data through interviews and non-participant observation. Key respondents included seven labor migrants who have experience in working abroad at different periods of time. We also interviewed two village leaders about historical and general information of the community. The international migration started in Baan Sawang in 1982 when male villagers went to work in the Middle East. Women’s migration to Asian countries started around 1997. Nowadays, international migration is still popular among the villagers. We found that villagers still have aspirations to migrate. Although international migration was shaped by economic conditions at first, it later became driven by socio-cultural conditions after villagers had more migration experience. International migration is maintained by conditions such as the “coming-of-age” transition and duties which are shaped by gender values in the community. These conditions become major push factors that underlie the culture of migration in the community. Thus, migration studies should pay attention to such subjective factors as experience, aspiration and meaning leading to migration.
