History of Depression: From Melancholia to Depression

Abstract
Depression is a mental illness that gains recognition as a serious health problem nowadays. This mental illness is often linked to modern lifestyle and capitalism. However, the illness so-called “depression”is always present throughout the history of mankind. This article traces the historical background of depression in the Western world from the ancient antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the age of Enlightenment, the Victorian era, to the contemporary period. By doing so, this article demonstrates how the perception of depression has changed over time. Depression has been continuously transformed by beliefs and ethos as well as medical knowledge in each period. These changes thus affect the diagnosis and treatments of the illness. Depression is incessantly re-conceptualized in the history.
