In August 1971 US President Richard Nixon announced the suspension of the dollar’s convertibility into gold. The move was considered the most significant economic action since World War II. It eventually led to the end of the post-war Bretton Woods system of fixed exchange rate. Subsequent US economic policies and falling dollar brought about global financial and economic crisis. The European Community was profoundly hit by the crisis. A number of integration projects were stagnated and some European currencies were on the brink of
collapse. Amid these difficulties, the Community began the search for financial and economic independent from the US. Early attempts at monetary cooperation among EC member states were painful and success was not in sight by the end of the decade. The effort, however, laid the foundation for later economic and monetary projects. It would also pave the way for the achievement of the monetary union and European single currency in the 1980s and 1990s.
