บทคัดย่อ

      During the years 1750-1770, Voltaire fought relentless battles with what he named “Infâme”, anything or anybody considered an enemy of the Enlightenment. His effective arms used in this war were a kind of satirical writing called “facéties”. Among these works, there was one “facetie” entitled “Relation de la maladie, de la confession, de la mort et de I’apparition du jésuiteBerthier […]” (1759), which may considered a jewel among Voltaire’s satirical writings, equal to, or even more brilliant than, his well – known philosoplical tale Candide. Voltaire wrote the “Relation […]” to attack Father Berthier, a Jésuit priest, the editor of the Journal de Trevoux, who had condemned the Encyclopédie, a symbol of the Enlightenment is the eyes of Voltaire. The essential tactic which Voltaire used to crush his adversary in the “Relation […]” was to render his victim ridiculous, derisive, a laughting stock. To achieve this, Voltaire employed literary devices efficiently inconjunction with his abundance in gaiety, humour and imagination. The conseguence of the “Relation […]” is the abolishment of the society of Jesus in 1764.
