Definitions of Culture: Losing Sight of the Forest for the Splinters?

บทคัดย่อ

The importance of understanding what we mean when we refer to culture is discussed. A variety of definitions of culture over last hundred years are examined, both from the historical and disciplinary perspective. It is concluded that the majority of definitions belong to a consistent tradition of thought, and that reductionist-structuralist thinking that has gained pre-eminence in the field of intercultural communication is out of step with this tradition. It is concluded that steps should be taken to reclaim this tradition and regain a broad and ‘synthetic’ view of culture.
