มะพร้าว: ต้นไม้แห่งชีวิตในวัฒนธรรมไทย

บทคัดย่อ

มีสำนวนไทยที่บรรพบุรุษคิดผูกขึ้นใช้ในชีวิตประจำวันอยู่หลายสำนวน สำนวนดังกล่าวเอ่ยถึงต้นไม้แห่งชีวิตซึ่งหมายถึงมะพร้าว เมื่อศึกษาเรื่องมะพร้าวมากขึ้นพบว่ามะพร้าวเป็นพืชวัฒนธรรมไทยอย่างแท้จริง เพราะแทบทุกส่วนของต้นมะพร้าวสามารถนำมาใช้ประโยชน์ในวิถีชีวิตไทยได้ตั้งแต่เกิดจนตาย ด้านคติความเชื่อถือว่ามะพร้าวเป็นไม้มงคลอย่างหนึ่ง และยังนำคำว่ามะพร้าวมาเล่นปริศนาคำทายได้อีก

นอกจากมะพร้าวมีบทบาทสำคัญต่อวิถีชีวิตไทยในอดีตแล้ว ปัจจุบันด้วยภูมิปัญญาท้องถิ่นของคนไทยยังสามารถผลิตน้ำมันไบโอดีเซลขึ้นได้จากการนำน้ำมันมะพร้าวมาผสมกับน้ำมันก๊าดหรือน้ำมันดีเซล และหากพัฒนาไปได้อย่างยั่งยืน มะพร้าวอาจช่วยกู้วิกฤตเศรษฐกิจได้ นั่นย่อมถือว่ามะพร้าวเป็นต้นไม้แห่งชีวิตอย่างแท้จริง เป็นต้นไม้คู่บ้านคู่เมืองเป็นพืชวัฒนธรรมไทยที่เคียงคู่อยู่กับวิถีชีวิตไทยตลอดไป

A great number of Thai idioms which have been used in every day speech are centered on coconut palms. The writer discovered that the coconut palms represents the “tree of life” in Thai culture because all part of the coconut palms are used in everyday activity of Thai way from birth to death. Beside they represent because they are related to every aspect of Thai way of life such as Thai cuisine, Thai superstitious beliefs, games and riddles.

In the present day, coconut palms play an important role in solving the energy crisis. Thai people invented a new type of the energy called Bio-diesel which is derived from mixing coconut oil with kerosene in order to replace diesel. The Bio-diesel may help solve our country’s economic crisis. In short, the coconut palms are regarded as the “tree of life” or an important plant of Thai culture.
