บทคัดย่อ

บทความนี้เสนอการวิเคราะห์ตัวบทเพื่อศึกษาตัวละครมาดามโบวารีของกุสตาฟ โฟลแบรต์ ด้วยคู่ตรงข้าม “ความเป็นหญิง/ความเป็นชาย” ความเป็นหญิงของตัวละครอธิบายได้จากภาพลักษณ์สาวสวยซึ่งผู้ประพันธ์ถ่ายทอดผ่านสายตาตัวละครชาย โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งผู้ที่มีความสัมพันธ์ฉันชู้สาวกับเธอ ในสายตาของชาร์ลส์ ผู้เป็นสามี และโรดอล์ฟ ชู้รักคนหนึ่ง มาดามโบวารีเป็นหญิงสาวทางเสน่ห์เย้ายวนและในสายตาของเลออง ชู้รักอีกคนหนึ่งนั้น เธองดงามและน่าเทิดทูน ความเป็นชายของมาดามโบวารีแฝงอยู่ภายในรูปลักษณ์สาวงามดังกล่าวและส่งผลต่อความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างตัวละครกับสามีและชู้รักทั้งสอง รวมทั้งต่อชะตาชีวิตของเธอเอง การกระทำและคำพูดของตัวละคร ตลอดจนวัตถุที่ปรากฏในเรื่องเล่า สื่อให้เห็นความเป็นชายของมาดามโบวารีที่แสดงพฤติกรรมซึ่งบ่งชี้การบงการ บังคับ กดขี่เพศชาย ความเป็นหญิง/ความเป็นชายของมาดามโบวารีสรุปได้ดังคำวิจารณ์ของชาร์ลส์ โบดแลร์ว่า “จิตใจชายชาตรีในเรือนกายหญิงเจ้าเสน่ห์”

This article consists of a textual analysis using the binary opposition “femininity / masculinity” to study Madame Bovary, one of Gustave Flaubert’s main characters. Her femininity is seen in the way in which Flaubert portrays her as a beautiful lady, especially from the point of view of those who have love affairs with her. To her husband Charles as well as to Rodolphe, one of her lovers, Madame Bovary is a charming and sexually attractive woman. To another lover, Léon, she is graceful and admirable. However, Madame Bovary’s masculinity is hidden behind the image of a very lovely lady and has several effects on her own life and her relationships with her husband and her lovers. The character’s actions, words and features of her environment can be interpreted as signs of Madame Bovary’s masculinity which indicate her authority over men as well as her control and domination of men. Madame Bovary’s  femininity / masculinity can be described by Charles Baudelaire’s remark that Madame Bovary comprises “a virile soul in a charming feminine body”.
