This article tackles the question of public and private sphere dichotomy. The article will put forward two points. Firstly, it will argue that to understand the actual mode of being-in-space, the historical understanding needs to depart from the analytical frame of the public as the political and the private as the non-political. Secondly, it is important to prioritise the lived experience of the subject, since space and spatiality can only be fromed and lived by agents who inhabit in it. To support these points, I will examine the diaries of Anne Lister, a Nineteenth century Halifax landed gentry. She explicitly recorded her daily life, several lesbian relationships, and her struggle in the business and political spheres. I will argue that the necessity of Anne Lister to separate her private life from the public sphere exposes the inadequacy of the old analytical frame.
