Perrault's Fairy tale 'La Barbe bleue' presents the themes of themptation and forbidden thing. The male protagonist gives his wife the house to look after during his absence, but forbids her to enter one chamber. The wife transgresses. The paper's author, using psychoanalysis, finds that these themes present a sexual association with defloration, which some societies consider as a taboo becuase the act causes anxiety in some men. In fact, Sigmund Freud believes that even in a society where defloration is not a taboo, men are unconsciously afraid of it. This fear can be found in curious forms in many literary works. This paper demonstrates that 'La barbe bleue' is one of these.
