GUIDELINE FOR PROPAGATION BUDDHISM OF OVERSEAS DHAMMADUTA BHIKKHUS IN SOUTH AFRICA

Abstract

Objectives of this research article were: 1. to investigate the current state of Buddhist propagation in South Africa, 2. to analyze the problems and obstacles encountered by Dhammaduta Bhikkhus, and 3. to propose appropriate methods for Buddhist propagation within the context of South Africa's multicultural society. The research adopted a qualitative methodology, including documentary analysis and in-depth interviews with 16 purposively selected key informants. These informants included Dhammaduta Bhikkhus, policymakers, scholars, and temple committee members. Data were collected using both quantitative surveys and structured in-depth interviews. The data were divided into two categories: 1. primary data from the interviews and 2. secondary data from academic documents, Buddhist scriptures, research articles, and online sources. The data were analyzed using content analysis to synthesize the main findings.

Findings were as follows: 1. The current state of Buddhist propagation in South Africa has made progressive development. Dhammaduta Bhikkhus can adjust their methods to suit local communities, such as organizing religious activities, providing meditation training, using digital media, and building networks with local organizations, which makes Buddhism more accepted. 2. Major problems and obstacles include differences in language, ethnicity, culture, legal and policy limitations, as well as competition with other religions in a multi-religious society. Therefore, it is necessary to rely on perseverance, continuity, and adjustment of strategies. 3. Effective methods include developing systematic training for Dhammaduta Bhikkhus in Buddhist teachings, language proficiency, and communication skills; fostering cooperation with local communities, government agencies, and academic institutions; utilizing digital media; and developing temples as centers for learning and meditation practice. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that overseas Dhammaduta Bhikkhus in South Africa have successfully applied contextually appropriate strategies, enabling Buddhism to be accepted and grow steadily within the religious and cultural diversity of South African society.
