BELIEFS AND RITUALS OF LI TEE MEOW SHRINE OF THE CHINESE HAKKA, POMPRAAPSATTRUPHAY DISTRICT, BANGKOK

Abstract

This research aimed to study beliefs and rituals of Li Tee Meow Shrine of the Chinese Hakka, Pompraapsattruphay district, Bangkok. This is a qualitative research that examines document data and used field data collection methods through In-depth interviews with 20 people involved in supply important information and observations. The collected data were analyzed studied and presented the results of the study by descriptive analysis.

The results showed that the Li Tee Meow Shrine, Pompraapsattruphay district still had four clearly visible beliefs: Wishing good health, wishing for good fortune and money, Extraction in bad luck year and Making offerings to the ancestors of the Hakka Chinese. As for the rituals of the shrine, there were 2 rituals. 1) Ritual of the birthday of Deity Li Tee to celebrate the birthday of the Deity Li Tee. 2) Extraction ritual to help promote a smooth fortune safe from danger. The ritual arrangement reflected the role of the shrine, which is to help anchor the mind, social assistance and inherit the culture of the Chinese Hakka. At present, Li Tee Meow Shrine still believed and performed the above rituals throughout the year and was a religion that clearly reflected the Chinese Hakka culture in Thai society.
