ENVIRONMENT OF LEARNING AND TEACHING PALI LANGUAGE AT BUDDHIST SCHOOL IN MUANG DISTRICT, CHIANGMAI PROVINCE

Abstract

The objective of this research was to study Environment, Problem and Way to develop the environment of learning and teaching the Pali Language. This was the qualitative research based on documentary studies and in-depth interviews with 12 key informants chosen through purposive sampling consisting of 8 monks who were teachers and 8 monks and novices who were learners at Buddhist schools in Muang district, Chiangmai province. The data were analyzed through descriptive analysis. The research results were found that; 1) the classrooms were in a good condition and proportional and the teaching media were modern. The interactions between instructors and learners were friendly. The factors that promote better teaching must be the motivations by the learners themselves. 2) The school buildings had deteriorated over time, windows were partly damaged due to naughty play by learners, noise from motorcycles caused distraction to teaching and some learners did not study well. 3) Teachers, learners and Janitor must help maintaining the premises, classrooms should be electronically developed and adapted to keep pace with modern technologies and the learners should be taught to know about benefits of learning the Pali language from the senior learners who were successful in life.
