Abstract

In this research, the objectives were as follows; (1) to examine the
characteristics of organizational structure and the effects of the operational
conditions of graduate schools, (2) to compare the characteristics of organizational
structure of graduate schools in Bangkok Metropolis (BM) as classified by gender,
age, marital status, and position, (3) to study the relationship between the
characteristics of organizational structure and the operations of graduate schools in
BM, and (4) to establish the guidelines for the organizational structure suitable to
the operations of public university graduate schools in BM.

The sample consisted of 400 personnel from the graduate schools of
eight public universities. These public universities were Chulalongkorn University,
Kasetsart University, King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok,
Srinakharinwirot University, Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University, Suan Dusit Rajabhat
University, Chandrakasem Rajabhat University, and Ramkhamhaeng University.
A questionnaire was used as a research instrument for collecting germane
data. The reliability of the questionnaire as a whole was found to lie at 0.945.
Using techniques of descriptive statistics, the researcher analyzed the data
collected in terms of frequency, percentage, mean (M), and standard deviation (SD).
A t test technique and the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique were
also employed by the researcher in addition to Pearson’s product moment
correlation coefficient (PPMCC) method.

Findings are as follows:
The operational conditions for these graduate schools were shown
overall to be at the good level. The item carrying the highest M was the case
involving making adjustments in rules, regulations, and announcements so as to
accommodate a management structure in which there shall always be coordination
by all parties concerned. The item showing the lowest M involved budgetary
support in the aspects necessary for allowing prompt operations by subdivision
heads in respect to the self-development of personnel.
The characteristics of the organizational structure of public university
graduate schools in BM were overall found to be exhibited at a good level. In
regard to the four aspects examined, it was found that supervision and organization
were evinced at a good level, while delegation of authority and decentralization
were displayed at a moderate level.
In regard to hypothesis testing, it was found that the personnel with
different demographical characteristics of gender, marital status, and educational
level did not exhibited concomitant differences overall in their opinions concerning
the characteristics of the organizational structure of the graduate schools at 0.05
level. The personnel with different age and marital status position had different
overall in their opinions concerning the characteristics of organizational structure at
the statistically significant, at 0.05 level. Moreover, the characteristics of the
organizational structure of the graduate schools were overall positive correlated
with the operations of the graduate schools.
