ANALYTICAL STUDY OF THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SENSE - FIELD IN SAḶĀYATANA VIBHAṄGASUTTA

In this thesis, the researcher aims to study An Analytical Study of the
Importance of the Āyatana in Saḷāyatana Vibhaṅga Sutta. There are two objectives
in this thesis namely; (1) to study the content and the principles of Buddhist
teaching in Saḷāyatana Vibhaṅga Sutta. (2) An Analytical Study on the Importance of
the Āyatana in Saḷāyatana Vibhaṅga Sutta. The methodology the is documentary
research and using an analysis by the descriptive method.
The findings of this research as following:
1) Saḷāyatana Vibhaṅga Sutta is a medium-sized sutta, and it is the 12th
edition of the Tipitaka on the classification of Āyatana. It is a sutta that the Buddha
showed to the monks who were practicing at Chetawan temple Savatti City. The
Load Buddha want to make the monks who listen his sermon have more clearly
knowledge of the Āyatana and then they can solve their problems related to the
practice. By The essence of the Āyatana in Saḷāyatana Vibhaṅga Sutta is a matter of
classification of the function of the Ajjhattikāyatana or internal sense-fields and the
Bāhirāyatana or external sense-fields and the mind. Said that when the
Ajjhattikāyatana or internal sense-fields 6 include 1) Cakkhu : the eye 2) Sota : the
ear 3) Ghāna : the nose 4) Jivhā : the tongue 5) Kāya : the body 6) Mana : the
mind and the Bāhirāyatana or external sense-fields 6 include 1) Rūpa : form; visible
objects 2) Sadda : sound 3) Gandha : smell; odour 4) Rasa : taste 5) Phoṭṭhabba :
touch; tangible objects 6) Dhamma : mind-objects come to reach together, then it
will be the soul and then arises contact and Feeling, Manopavicāra or mind
torching 18, Sattapada or lesson to learning 36, Upekkhā or equanimity 2, and
Vipassanā or the highest insight meditation that is Atammayatā, which teaches the
hierarchy of the destruction of the passions through the process of Āyatana which
can attaining enlightenment. According to the analysis, the knowledge of Āyatana
12 in the Saḷāyatana Vibhaṅga 2) Sutta is worthwhile such as (1) it causes mental
training. (2) To makes the Self controlled in the precepts. (3) Cause the passion
does not enter the mind. (4) To make a living with carelessness; (5) to make all the
suffering.
