Design and Development of Multimedia Innovations to Promote Cognitive Skills in Early Childhood

The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to study and develop the efficiency of multimedia-based instructional innovations designed to enhance cognitive skills in early childhood, and (2) to compare the cognitive skills of children before and after exposure to the developed media. A mixed-methods research design was employed. The participants included 241 teachers from early childhood development centers under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, selected through simple random sampling in accordance with predetermined criteria. Research instruments consisted of a structured questionnaire and a semi-structured interview protocol. Quantitative data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis. The multimedia innovation developed in this study comprised 12 sets of storybooks integrated with Augmented Reality (AR) and three-dimensional (3D) materials. The validity assessment yielded an Index of Item Objective Congruence (IOC) ranging from 0.78 to 1.00, confirming the appropriateness and accuracy of the media. The efficiency evaluation demonstrated that the innovation achieved the 80/80 efficiency criterion. Furthermore, the effectiveness index (E.I.) of children’s cognitive skills before and after learning with the innovation was 0.81, indicating a substantial improvement in cognitive development.


The findings suggest that AR-based multimedia innovations, when integrated with tangible learning materials, are effective in promoting cognitive skills among young children. The study highlights the potential of technology-enhanced media as an instructional tool in early childhood education and provides a foundation for further research into scalable, sustainable applications across diverse educational contexts.
