The objectives of this research were to explore: 1) characteristics of red-whiskered bulbul owners, and 2) preferences for birdcages among red-whiskered bulbul owners in Bangkok and its vicinity. This study employed mixed research methods of quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitatively, a questionnaire was used to collect data from 131 owners of red-whiskered bulbuls, selected using purposive sampling, in Bangkok and its vicinity. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics. Qualitatively, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, structured observations, field notes and memos were conducted with red-whiskered bulbul owners in Bangkok, Samut Sakhon, Samut Prakan, Nonthaburi, and Nakhon Pathom. The results indicated that most red-whiskered bulbul owners used the small square cage with 13 bars, without patterns or carved parts, made of black and white woods with the price range of 2,500 - 7,000 baht per cage, and made by birdcage makers in the Southern part. They also preferred ordering the cages on the phone using the numbers obtained online. Red-whiskered bulbul owners also preferred birdcages that are long-lasting and with prices suitable for their economic status.
