Study of Problems, Importance, and Behavioral Indicators of English Listening and Speaking Skills for Communication for Undergraduate Students

The objectives of this article are 1) to examine the importance and problems of listening skills; Speak English for communication for undergraduate students 2) To explore behavioral indicators of listening skills Spoken English for Communication for Undergraduate Students. It is qualitative research based on the concept of activity-based learning framework. The sample group is 5 English teachers in higher education and 5 experts in English curriculum and teaching in higher education selected by purposive sampling method. The tool used in the research is In-depth interview. Data were analyzed by content analysis (Analytic induction). The findings reveal that
- Research findings for objective number 1 found that English listening and speaking skills are important because they will be used in communication. Students with good English skills can choose better and high-paying jobs. Problems with listening and speaking English skills speak are studying English for insufficient hours per week and not being able to practice English skills after class, The format for teaching English is in the form of lectures, Lack of promotion of activities for students to apply the knowledge gained in their daily lives.
- Research findings for objective number 2: Behavioral indicators of listening skills are: 1. Learners can listen to their interlocutors and understand what they hear and respond naturally. 2. Learners can listen to short text information. 3. Learners can listen to stories in various contexts of daily life. 4. Learners cooperate in various activities that use English to communicate. 5. Learners can listen and respond. Behavioral indicators of speaking skills are: 1. Learners can speak and respond naturally in English. 2. Learners can speak and answer short questions. 3. Learners can apply knowledge of the main structure of English by conveying it from speaking 4. Learners can speak about everyday life in many contexts. 5. Learners can cooperate in various activities that use English to communicate. 6. Learners can speak and interact with the interlocutor with the same understanding. 7. Learners can speak with confidence.
The knowledge gained from this research will be useful for teaching and learning to develop English listening and speaking skills of undergraduate students.
