Haegeum: String Instrument of Korean Music Culture

Abstract

Haegeum is a traditional Korean string instrument. It is the same
as fiddle, and there are two strings. Haegeum is much important for
Korean culture. According to its sound of smoothness and different
ranges of sound to arouse emotions such as sorrow and joy, Haegeum is
brought to play in court music, folk music and modern music. As a
result, Haegeum is widely applies to play in different kinds of Korean
music ensembles.
This article is presented about 1.Haegeum musical background
2. Physical and sound of Haegeum and 3.Aesthetics of haegeum playing
methods. Which the background of Haegeum was possibly known in
Korea in the period of Goryeo Dynasty. It was probably brought to Korea
by Song Dynasty of China. In the period of Joseon Dynasty, Haegeum had
developed to play in Korean court music and transferred the playing
knowledge from the past until the present day. The playing methods is
still holding an original way and it is also improved to play with modern
music for modernity and entertainment of every genders and ages.
