Approaches to Musical Cultures in the Mekong Region

Abstract

The musical cultures in the Mekong Region show a great deal of
variety. What are the factors of musical diversity? What are the
approaches to Mekong Region musical cultures? And what should we
study in Mekong Region musical cultures? This article aims to present
approaches to musical cultures in the Mekong Region.
The results are as follows. Firstly, factors affecting Mekong
Region musical cultures were political and demographic-cultural.
Secondly, the approaches to Mekong Region musical cultures can be
divided into two groups, namely royal court music and local and ethnic
music. Finally, what we should study in Mekong Region musical cultures
includes the study in music and the study about music. In summary, the
political, economic and social development resulted in a variety of
musical forms in the Mekong Region. The musical cultures can be both
synchronic and diachronic studies.
