Local Wisdom for Sustainable Resources Management at Bandon Bay in Suratthani Province

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to localize wisdom for sustainable resources. The study was conducted in Bandon Bay, Surat Thani province, where the study was qualitative research. The objectives of the study were to gain folk wisdom of Bandon Bay and the situation area of Bandon Bay resources, to study sustainable development resources by folk wisdom, and to find out how to of reactivate, inherit and carry-on sustainable development resources by from the folk wisdom of Bandon Bay. The sample was selected from sage villagers, the community leader, and the resources conservation member of Thachang, Donsak , and Punpin district . The data were collected via academic articles, interviews, observation, focus groups discussion, and workshop.According to the study, agriculturists and local fisheries depended on the ecological integrity of Bandon Bay's mangrove forest and coast for aquatic animal richness. The part, all fishermen used fishery inventions by themselves, so it did not damage the environment, and normally, they fished for household consumption, after which they traded for something else. The situation has changed since 1973 - 1982 from household consumption to commercial fishing. From 1991 to 2002, government policies aided the private sector and ordinary citizens in establishing tiger prawn farms and shellfish farms. In 2002-2007 the government lunch sea food bank policy that sea assets to deed poll community which destroyed mangrove forest ecosystem and coast was severe deteriorated so affected to local fishery lifestyle and then the aquatic animal shortage for made a living. Finally, the community around Bandon Bay concerns folk wisdom to find sustainable development resources by using traditional wisdom to manage mangrove forests, sustainable development of fishery and how to rely on the wide direction of fisheries. Set up a conservation grouping with a development associate and a government officer by establishing rules for resource management and also sustainable development resources in the Apaytan (no hunting) area, such as conserving area, mangrove forest management, crab habitat, mangrove forest conservation, fish habitat, and creating a windproof line. To achieve sustainable development resources through folk wisdom, a conservation awareness campaign, the expansion of the conservation group to include all of Bandon Bay, the expansion of the network of conservation marine volunteers, and the modification of the law to the present.
