การรู้สารสนเทศเป็นทักษะสำคัญสำหรับการเรียนรู้ในศตวรรษที่ 21 ผู้เรียนจำเป็นต้องพัฒนาทักษะการรู้สารสนเทศที่ประกอบด้วยความสามารถในการกำหนดความต้องการสารสนเทศ การเข้าถึงสารสนเทศ การประเมินสารสนเทศและแหล่งสารสนเทศ และการใช้สารสนเทศอย่างมีจริยธรรมและถูกกฎหมาย เมื่อมีทักษะการรู้สารสนเทศแล้ว ผู้เรียนจะสามารถเรียนรู้และพัฒนาตนเองจนกลายเป็นผู้เรียนรู้ตลอดชีวิตได้ บทความนี้นำเสนอเนื้อหาแบ่งเป็น 5 ส่วน ได้แก่ (1) ความเป็นมา ความหมายและความสำคัญของการรู้สารสนเทศ (2) คุณลักษณะของผู้รู้สารสนเทศ (3) มาตรฐานการรู้สารสนเทศ (4) การสอนและการประเมินการรู้สารสนเทศ และ (5) การเผยแพร่และติดตามความรู้เกี่ยวกับการรู้สารสนเทศ
