Integration Guidelines and Strategies for Teaching Chinese Characters

Abstract

                       This academic article aims to explain the problems in learning and teaching Chinese characters among Thai learners and to suggest integrated teaching approaches. Through the study of documents, textbooks, and related research, it was found that Thai learners currently face multiple issues in learning Chinese characters. These problems stem from curriculum structure, content, teaching materials, and teachers' unengaging teaching methods. Additionally, there is a lack of Chinese character teaching activities, which directly affects learners by fostering negative attitudes towards Chinese characters, impairing their understanding of Chinese character memorization principles, and hindering the correct writing of Chinese characters, which may have long-term effects on the learners. In response to these issues, the author has compiled a variety of learning approaches to help address the problems and has proposed methods for integrating relevant knowledge into Chinese character teaching strategies. These strategies allow instructors to select appropriate teaching methods tailored to the management of Chinese character instruction for Thai learners, potentially enhancing their effectiveness in learning Chinese characters. The proposed teaching guidelines for Thai learners are categorized into two main areas: 1) the evolution of Chinese characters and 2) the components of Chinese characters, which are further divided into 2.1) basic strokes of Chinese characters, 2.2) stroke order of Chinese characters, and 2.3) the structure of Chinese characters. Additionally, each area is composed of two parts: 1) strategies for teaching Chinese characters and 2) the integration of Chinese character teaching.
