A translation strategy of passive construction from French into Thai in academic and non-academic documentary

This research aims to study a translation strategy of passive construction from French into Thai. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were applied in this study from academic and non-academic documentary research. This includes a categorization of passive construction of Thai translation found in French passive construction which was based on passive construction in Thai translation in a theory of Universal translation by Newmark. From a study of translation strategies, three types were found: faithful translation, communicative translation, free translation and unpair translation. The mostly found type was communicative translation in both academic (73.59 per cent) and non-academic documents (79.68 per cent). The unpair translation may be due to the translator being unable to use any translation strategies. They may have insufficient knowledge of the source and target languages or omitted because they were superfluous words. From this assumption, this may lead to further studies for the next study.
