Factors Predicting the Intention to Engage in Sexual Intercourse among University Students with Using Dating Applications

Abstract
This cross-sectional survey aimed to study the proportion and factors predicting the intention to have sexual intercourse among university students using dating applications at a university in Phayao Province. The sample consisted of 362 students, with data collected in June 2024 using a questionnaire based on the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA). Chi-square and logistic regression statistics were applied. The results revealed that the sample consisted of more females than males (56.63% and 43.37%, respectively), with an average age of 19.84 years. Two-thirds were single, with an average monthly expense of 6,000 THB, and most resided in private dormitories. The proportion of students intending to have sexual intercourse was 31.77%. Statistically significant factors associated with the intention to have sexual intercourse (p-value < 0.05) included gender, faculty group, use of dating applications, attitude toward sexual intercourse, group norms, and undesirable risky sexual behaviors. Predictive factors included gender, faculty group, use of dating applications, and attitude toward sexual intercourse, which collectively explained 22.2% of the variance in students' intention to have sexual intercourse (R² = 0.222). The university should collaborate with relevant agencies to organize activities promoting knowledge, adjusting attitudes, and providing appropriate education on the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases to prevent unintended pregnancies and unsafe sexual practices among university students.
