Intertextuality in the Novel “Asoke Sang” Written by Prapt

Abstract

          This article aimed to explore characteristic of intertextuality in the novel entitled, “Asoke Sang” written by Prapt. The data collection derived from one of Prapt’s 424-page novels entitled, “Asoke Sang”, printed in 2564 B.E. The findings showed that the author had applied 4 characteristics of intertextuality in the novel’s theme. Such intertextualities were apparent in literatures, news, mass medias, and social situations. To compose his novel, the author mainly applied the literature intertextuality via the literature on Vikram and the Vampire (or Tales of Hindu Devilry), apparent in the story’s outline, murder cases, situations, etc. ‘Asoke Sang’ aims to convey its main idea cautiously and consciously in accordance with Vikram and the Vampire’s essence. As the supportive main ideas of the story, the author applied the intertextualities apparent in news cases, mass medias, and social situations, like the characters’ characteristics, actions, and behaviors. In conclusion, these intertextualities act on the character of police’s investigation, showing-off, the murder’s characteristic, sequences of murder cases in the story, case-solving, and characters’ traits. The intertextualities also shape its plot to be more interesting.
