Model for developing organic agricultural technology for the elderly: A solution to improving the quality of life and food security in the community through community participation in Hang Chat District, Lampang Province

Abstract

This research investigates the development of an organic farming model suited for elderly residents in Hang Chat District, Lampang Province. It employs a community participation approach, emphasizing the integration of traditional knowledge with modern technology. The goal is to establish a sustainable organic farming system that bolsters food security in the community. The analysis identified eight key components for effective organic farming technology transfer to seniors as follows: 1) Baseline Information: Gathering data on the elderly population, local economy, social structures, and the community's ecosystem. 2) Empowerment: Providing financial aid, necessary equipment, technological support, and relevant knowledge. 3) Capacity Building: Delivering training programs on organic farming practices adapted for the elderly's needs. 4) Market Access: Identifying channels to sell produce, generating income for participating seniors. 5) Network Development: Fostering connections between seniors, government agencies, private businesses, and relevant organizations. 6) Standardization and Improvement: Elevating the quality of produce to meet organic farming standards. 7) Brand Building: Establishing a unique identity and value proposition for the community's organic products. 8) Sustainability: Developing an environmentally responsible, long-term organic farming system. By applying this organic farming model, the research anticipates several benefits that will enhance the potential of organic farming technology in rural communities: improved quality of life for seniors, enhanced food security, and increased income generation. These positive outcomes demonstrate the potential of organic farming technology to empower the elderly, improve their well-being, and contribute to the overall food security and economic development of rural communities.
