Abstract

Abstract

            This study investigated history, musical characteristics, roles, and functions of the Saloh Saw Seung Folk Music Long Nan Band in Charim Subdistrict, Tha Pla District, Uttaradit Province. The study was conducted through document and field study.Observation data and interview data obtained from experts, faculty heads, senior musicians, musicians, employers and audiences were presented through descriptive analytical methods. Results of the study showed that,

            in terms of history, the band has been managed through three successive generations. In the first generation, Khun Ta Sawang Rinsan and his relatives set up a Saloh Saw Seung band popularly known as Wong Saloh Saw Seung Ta Sawang.  During his time, Khun Ta Sawang had transmitted all musical knowledge to his descendants. After his death, the knowledge was passed to Mrs. Ja Inthachan, who, later on, passed it on to her son, Mr. Trairong Inthachan, the current leader of the group. Mr. Trairong Inthachan has combined international bands to the Saloh Saw Seung band. Such combination makes the  band very popular today. Results also revealed that the players in the band are able to play many more songs both for dancing performance as well as for improvised performance. In terms of instruments, the blue electric guitar is added into the band to help boost the sound from the amplifier. The band is seen playing in both auspicious and inauspicious events. Results clearly revealed that Chang Saw (the performer) excels at composing music and doing improvised performance. Interestingly, the band has adjusted itself to meet the changing of social conditions, traditions, and rituals that result from cultural and social interaction.
