The Development of Critical Reading Ability of Mathayomsuksa 2 Students by Problem-Based Learning (PBL) with Exercises

Abstract

           This research aims to: 1. create and evaluate the effectiveness of a learning management approach for developing critical reading abilities of Mathayomsuksa 2 students using problem-based learning (PBL) combined with exercises, achieving the 75/75 criteria; 2. compare the critical reading abilities of Mathayomsuksa 2 students before and after using PBL combined with exercises; and 3. examine the satisfaction level of Mathayomsuksa 2 students with the learning management approach for developing critical reading abilities using PBL combined with exercises. The study population consisted of 172 Mathayomsuksa 2 students enrolled in semester 2 of the 2023 academic year at PrachaSongkrowittaya School in Phitsanulok Province, distributed across five classrooms. The sample group included 36 Mathayomsuksa 2/3 students from the same school and semester, selected through simple random sampling by drawing lots. The research tools used include: 1) a learning management plan; 2) training exercises to develop critical reading abilities; 3) a test to measure critical reading abilities; and 4) a satisfaction assessment form. Data analysis was performed using statistical methods such as mean (), standard deviation (S.D.), and dependent t-tests.

             The research findings indicate:

1. The effectiveness of the learning management approach for developing critical reading abilities of Mathayomsuksa 2 students using PBL combined with exercises, achieving an efficiency rating of 77.50/76.67, which meets the 75/75 criteria;
2. A significant improvement in the critical reading abilities of Mathayomsuksa 2 students after using PBL combined with exercises compared to before, with a statistical significance level of 0.05; and
3. High satisfaction among Mathayomsuksa 2 students with the learning management approach that uses PBL combined with exercises to develop critical reading abilities.
