Abstract

ABSTRACT

Background: Thailand is entering an aging society, making preparation to reduce dependency necessary. Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) play an important role. This study aims to examine the effects of a CHV capacity development program on knowledge and preparedness behaviors for aging in pre-elderly individuals in Chanuman District, Amnat Charoen.

Design: A quasi-experimental single-group pre-test and post-test design.

Methods: The sample consisted of 68 pre-elderly individuals (aged 55-59 years) in the Chanuman Municipality area, randomly selected from the CHV responsibility list, with 34 individuals (1 CHV per 2 samples). The program included a 12-hour CHV capacity development course, followed by home visits, advice, and empowerment follow-ups on five aspects of aging preparedness over 10 weeks. Data were collected using a questionnaire on knowledge and preparedness behaviors for aging (reliability coefficient = 0.95) and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Paired Samples t-test to compare pre- and post-test means.

Results: The average age of the sample was 56.56 ± 1.52 years. After the intervention, the average knowledge score increased by 1.64±0.46 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.53-1.75), which was statistically significant (p < 0.001). The average preparedness behavior score increased by 1.44 ± 0.64 (95%CI: 1.29-1.59), which was also statistically significant
(p < 0.001).

Conclusion: The CHV capacity development program effectively increased knowledge and promoted preparedness behaviors for aging among pre-elderly individuals. This model should be applied to other population groups in the future.
