10 THE DEVELOPMENT MODEL OF SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT FOR COASTAL COMMUNITY OF BAN DON BAY, SURATTHANI PROVINCE

Abstract

This research was a mixed methods research with the following objectives: 1) To study
the waste management, 2) To develop a model for use as a guide in waste management, and
3) To evaluate the experimental implementation of the management model in waste
management. The sample group consisted of 398 people living in the vicinity of Ban Don Bay
Shoreline using Multi-Stage Sampling Method; and a qualitative research used a 30-people
sample group who attended meetings. The research tools were questionnaire, interview
handbook, seminar handbook, and evaluation handbook. Data analysis utilized statistical
packages i.e. percentage, average, and standard deviation.
The research results found that:
1. The waste management of the community was putting waste away in empty lots
around the houses at 55.0 percent; waste was sorted before putting away and some waste
was sold at 38.4 percent; waste was disposed by dumping in piles to burn at 35.4 percent. It
was found that, it was generally at a medium level.
2. A procedure of model development to use as guideline of community waste
management consisted of the following steps: Step 1) The construction of the model and
develop the model of waste management; Step 2) The participation of the people in waste
management through brain-storming procedure technique; and Step 3) The practice of
experimental utilization project of the waste management models3. The evaluation of the
experimental utilization of the community waste management following waste management
models on the Participation in the project found that in all aspects was at a high level. And
in general, it was at a high level. For all 4 Models to be effective and efficient, Government
units and the people in the community must participate in waste management.
