บทคัดย่อ
สงครามเป็นความชั่วร้ายทางกายภาพมากที่สุดที่เกิดขึ้นในโลกแต่เราก็อาจยินยอมให้เกิดขึ้นหากสงครามนั้นมีความชอบธรรมเพื่อปกป้องผู้ถูกคุกคามหรือเหยื่อผู้บริสุทธิ์โดยเขาให้เปรียบเทียบระหว่างสิทธิของเหยื่อผู้บริสุทธิ์กับสิทธิของผู้รุกรานว่าสิทธิของใครมากกว่ากันแน่นอนว่าในกรณีการรุกรานโดยปราศจากความชอบธรรมสิทธิของเหยื่อผู้บริสุทธิ์ย่อมเหนือกว่าผู้รู้กรานในกรณี เช่นนี้สามารถทำสงครามเพื่อป้องกันตัวได้ไม่ใช่ทำเพื่อคุกคามหรือรุกรานคนอื่นและการสงครามนั้นจะต้องทำโดยบุคคลหรือองค์กรที่มีอำนาจตามกฎหมาย เจตนารมณ์ของการทำสงครามถือว่าเป็นสิ่งสำคัญยิ่ง เพราะความปรารถนาที่จะทำร้ายความหิวกระหายในการล้างแค้นอย่างโหดร้าย จิตใจที่ไร้สันติ ไร้การผ่อนปรน ความหลงใหลการปฏิวัติ ความปรารถนาอำนาจและเรื่องทำนองนี้ทั้งหลายทั้งปวงนี้สมควรได้รับการประณามในสงคราม การทำสงครามหรือการใช้ความรุนแรงมีทั้งยุติธรรมและไม่ยุติธรรม ต้องมีสาเหตุที่ชอบธรรม มีเจตนาที่ชอบธรรม และเป็นทางเลือกสุดท้าย นอกจากนั้น การฟื้นฟูสันติภาพถือว่าเป็นแรงจูงใจที่สำคัญ เราไม่ได้แสวงหาสันติภาพเพื่อที่จะอยู่ในสงครามแต่เราเข้าสู่สงครามเพื่อที่ว่าเราอาจจะมีสันติภาพได้ ดังนั้น จงมีสันติภาพในการทำสงครามเพื่อที่ว่าท่านอาจเอาชนะบุคคลที่ท่านทำสงครามด้วยและจงนำความมั่งคั่งด้วยสันติภาพกลับมาให้แก่พวกเขา
