Legal Mechanisms for Supporting Sustainable Development and Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction in Thailand

Abstract

Thailand has developed legal mechanisms to support sustainable development with an emphasis on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Key measures include the establishment of regulatory frameworks aligned with international commitments, constitutional provisions mandating environmental protection, and statutory instruments such as the Energy Conservation Promotion Act and the Enhancement and Conservation of National Environmental Quality Act. The Thailand Voluntary Emission Reduction Program (T-VER) exemplifies practical implementation, encouraging participation from various sectors. These legal frameworks, coupled with policies promoting clean energy investment and sustainable resource management, demonstrate Thailand’s efforts to integrate environmental protection with economic growth. Nevertheless, challenges remain in enforcement and institutional coordination. Strengthening these mechanisms is essential to enhance Thailand’s capacity to address climate change and achieve long-term sustainability.
