Transitioning Financial Behavior from Lottery Gambling Dependency to Appropriate Savings for the Elderly

Abstract
This academic paper aims to examine lottery gambling behaviors among the elderly in Thailand and their impact on financial security , as well as to propose suitable approaches for transitioning from gambling dependency to appropriate saving habits for this demographic. The findings reveal that lottery purchasing behaviors among the elderly are interconnected with social and economic factors. Elderly individuals often perceive lottery buying as a social activity, a tool for generating hope, and a channel for supplementary income. However, such behaviors negatively impact long-term financial security, including the reduction of savings, overspending, and becoming a burden on family and society. This paper proposes behavioral adjustment strategies through easily comprehensible financial education, transforming lottery purchasing behaviors into saving habits, and shifting mindsets from seeking quick wealth to building long-term stability. These approaches aim to promote appropriate saving practices and sustainably enhance the quality of life for the elderly .
