Indicators of Dhamma for householders from the Dictionary of Buddhism: An example of synthesis

Abstract

     This research article aims to present an example of the synthesis of Dhamma indicators for family life from the Pali canon referenced in the book “Dictionary of Buddhism”, and is documentary research. The data were collected from books “Dictionary of Buddhism”, analyzed with content analysis and synthesized as indicators.

     The results showed that Dhamma for family life is a sub-type of Dhamma in the category of Dhamma for laypeople that refers to the Pali canon in 5 volumes, namely volumes 11, 15, 23, 21 and 25, containing 6 topics of Dhamma and 25 items, divided into 7 main positive indicators, namely 1) Ahunaiyaggi 2) Gahapatakki 3) Takkinaiyakki 4) Sacca 5) Tama 6) Khanti 7) Jaka,  the 14 secondary positive indicators were 1) Atijatabutta 2) Anuchatabutta 3) Nattagavesna 4) Chinnapatisangkhana 5) Primitpanphochana 6) Athipatchasilavanthathana 7) Samasatha 8) Samasila 9) Samajakha 10) Samapanya 11) Matabhariya 12) Bhakhinibhariya 13) Sakkibhariya 14) Tasabhariya, and 4 negative indicators, namely 1) Avajatabutta 2) Vathakabhariya 3) Joribhariya 4) Aiyabhariya. Being divided into 3 sets according to the target group, namely Dhammas, one for property, two for oneself, and three for family members, with only two related to Dhamma for social relations.
