“Phi-pob” (Ogre) : A remaining discourse in digital age

Abstract
Society is a product of supernatural forces that make up the social structure of human beings in all societies and control social acts from generation to generation. Isan society has developed beliefs in Buddhism alongside animism. Even though Isan society has been introduced to globalization where the power of capitalism and mass communication has made a global village of the world. This article aims to study Isan peop e’s beliefs in “Phi-pob” (Ogre) which have been held from the past to the present. The data were gathered through document review, internet searches, and interview . The findings reveal that beliefs in ogres, “Phi-pob”, still have an influence on Isan communities. How ever, there is a conflict between the younger and older generations. The beliefs in ogres stay intact among older generations, while the existence of “Phi-pob” is questioned by the new generation. It is challenge that whether “Phi-pob” can be used as a tool of social control in the future.
