Abstract

This research aims to investigate the reading behavior of undergraduate students at Rajamangala University of Technology Krungthep using a qualitative phenomenological research approach. The purposive sample comprised 15 participants, selected based on diversity in major and year level, willingness to participate, and reflective ability. They were also required to have reading experience with both print and digital media, defined as reading at least one book per month and engaging with digital media for over 3 hours per day. Data collection employed in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, behavioral observation, and content analysis of relevant documents. Qualitative data analysis was subsequently conducted to interpret and synthesize key themes.

The findings indicate that student reading behavior is diverse and more situational than habitual, with intrinsic motivation stemming from academic necessity or personal interest being a significant factor. Students preferred reading during the evening until bedtime at their private residences, while libraries were commonly used for group work, and cafés were another popular space for individual reading. Entertainment literature and news were more popular than textbooks, reflecting reading for emotional gratification and personal enjoyment. Reading through digital channels was highly influential. Key influencing factors included: intrinsic motivation, the influence of technology (which facilitates easy access to information but may lead to superficial information processing), a conducive physical environment, and the social context (including peer influence). Attitudes towards reading were diverse, but most students recognized its value for self-development and career preparation.
