A Study of Factors Influencing the Decision to Pursue Vocational Education in Vocational Institutions in Nonthaburi Province

Abstract
This research aimed to investigate students’ opinions regarding the factors influencing their decision to pursue vocational education in institutions under the Nonthaburi Vocational Education system. The study specifically focused on personal factors, parental support and opinions, as well as information and guidance factors. The sample consisted of 360 students from the first year of the Vocational Certificate (Voc. Cert. 1) and the first year of the Higher Vocational Certificate (High Voc. Cert. 1), selected through stratified random sampling. The research instrument was an online questionnaire administered via Microsoft Forms. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation, and inferential statistics, namely Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient.
The findings revealed that students reported a high overall level of opinion regarding all influencing factors. Among these, parental support and opinions, as well as information and guidance, achieved the highest mean score (X̅ = 4.13), followed by personal factors (X̅ = 4.10). The three highest-rated items were: vocational education helps achieve future goals (X̅ = 4.85), public relations media enhances understanding of its benefits (X̅ = 4.69), and having a business network (X̅ = 4.61). Further analysis showed statistically significant positive correlations among the three factors at the 0.01 level. Specifically, personal factors were strongly correlated with parental support and opinions (r = .713, Sig. = .000), as well as with information and guidance (r = .687, Sig. = .000). In addition, parental support and opinions were highly correlated with information and guidance (r = .794, Sig. = .000). These results confirm the research hypothesis and indicate the combined influence of these factors on students’ decision-making. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of personal motivations, family involvement, and access to accurate information in shaping students’ vocational choices. The findings can inform the planning of vocational guidance programs for lower secondary students and their parents, fostering greater awareness and appreciation of vocational education as a valuable educational pathway.
