Abstract

This study aims to explore the factors and components involved in shaping employees’ environmental experience, with the goal of developing a conceptual model for environmental experience among employees in the hotel industry in Thailand. A qualitative research approach was employed, using in-depth interviews with 15 key informants, including senior hotel executives, environmental policy experts in the service sector, and government agency representatives.

Findings related to the first objective revealed that the key factors contributing to the development of employees’ environmental experience in Thai hotel businesses include: (1) creation of a physically green environment, (2) implementation of environmentally-driven technological changes, and (3) cultivation of an organizational environmental culture. For the second objective, six core components were identified as constituting the employees' environmental experience: (1) self-worth recognition, (2) psychological safety, (3) physical and mental readiness, (4) environmental awareness and perception, (5) emotional attachment to sustainability, and (6) environmentally responsible behaviors. Based on the findings, a conceptual model of employees’ environmental experience in the hotel industry in Thailand is proposed. The model consists of three major dimensions: (1) the creation of environmental experiences within the organization, (2) the perceived value of experience influencing environmental behavior, and (3) sustainable performance.
