Abstract

In the 21st century, English communication performance is one of the ten key competencies for Thai learners. Effective teaching methods should support learners both cognitively and emotionally. This paper proposes the use of scaffolding techniques that foster effective learning environments through social interaction in the Zone of Proximal Development using the target language. Cognitive scaffolding involves teachers acting as facilitators who create learning environments that suit circumstances by fostering teaching methods, techniques, and mediums tailored to students' language abilities. Emotional scaffolding is the stimulation of a positive learning atmosphere, focusing on a positive attitude. As learners progress, the level of support gradually diminishes, encouraging them to tackle challenging tasks independently. Scaffolding techniques mirror the inherent learning process. Thus, they obtain a high degree of flexibility and can be applied to various teaching approaches.
