Struggling Readers in English: Solutions with Explicit Teaching
Main Article Content
Abstract
Reading English is crucial for learners of all levels. However, there are still some learners who struggle with reading English, such as phonic awareness, reading fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension and lacking motivation in reading. These reading problems can be solved by teachers using effective teaching methods. The most popular and widely used method for solving English reading problems for learners who learn English as a foreign or second language is Explicit Teaching. Explicit Teaching is a step-by-step method of teaching using demonstration, cognitive process training and scaffolding for learners in which teachers will systematically plan and examine the elements of teaching and learning process. In addition, students' understanding is constantly examined. Therefore, this academic article presents reading problems in English language that the language learners encounter and suggest the solutions for these problems by using Explicit Teaching.
