The Development of Critical Reading and Analytical Thinking Abilities Using SQ5R Technique with Graphic Organizers of Grade 9 Students

Abstract
This research aimed to develop the critical reading ability using the SQ5R technique with the graphic organizers of grade 9 students to have an average score not least 70% of the total score, and to have more than 70% of the students passed the criteria, and develop analytical thinking ability using the SQ5R technique with the graphic organizers of grade 9 students to have an average score not least 70% of the total score, and to have more than 70% of the students passed the criteria. The SQ5R reading technique consisted of 1) survey (S), 2) Question (Q), 3) read (R), 4) record (R), 5) recite (R), 6) review (R) with graphic organizers, and 7) reflect (R) with graphic organizers. The target group was 22 grade 9 students at Wiwekthammaprasitwittaya School, Khon Kaen Province during the second semester of the academic year 2021. The research design was action research. The research instruments divided into 3 types: operational tools, reflection tools, and assessment tools. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, consisting of Mean (), Standard Deviation (S.D.), and Percentage (%). Qualitative data was analyzed using content analysis. The research results were as follows; 1) the average score of the students’ critical reading ability was at 74.07 percent of the total score, and there were 81.82 percent of the students passed the criteria which were higher than the defined criteria, 2) the average score of the students’ analytical thinking ability was at 75.60 percent of the total score, and there were 77.27 percent of the students passed the criteria which were higher than the defined criteria.
