The Development of Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Abilities of Grade 10 Students by Using Inquiry Learning Process (7Es)

Abstract
The objectives of the research aimed to develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities of students by using inquiry learning process (7Es) to give the students’ average score not less than 70%, and not less than 70% of the student passed the criteria. The target group consisted of 45 grade 10 students who was studying at the secondary school, under the Office of Secondary Education Service Area, Khon Kaen. The research design was the action research. The research instruments were: 1) research operational tools such as lesson plans using inquiry learning process (7Es), 2) research reflection tools including (1) after instruction record form (2) teacher’s teaching behavior observation form (3) students’ interviews form (4) end-of-spiral critical thinking ability test, and (5) end-of-spiral problem-solving ability test, and 3) research evaluation tools including (1) critical thinking ability test, and (2) problem-solving ability test. Quantitative analysis was employed to analyze the data including means (), standard deviation (S.D.), frequency, and percentage (%). Content Analysis was employed for the qualitative analysis. The results found that 1) the students’ average score of the critical thinking ability was at 21.93 (S.D.=5.82) which was 73.10 percent of the total score, and there were 34 students which was 75.56 percent of all students passed the criteria which were higher than the defined criteria. 2) The students average score of the problem-solving ability was at 21.76 (S.D.=6.22) which was 72.53 percent of the total score, and there were 33 students which was 73.33 percent of the students passed the criteria which were higher than the defined criteria.
